free agent galore: expansion team in AL west?

with the unsigned free agents: i can piece together a championship contender. hypothetically, this team can be in the AL west, which has only 4 teams right now.

rotation
ben sheets 2 years-24 million
oliver perez 3 year 32 million
randy wolf 1 year 7.5 million
braden looper 1 year 6 million
pedro martinez 1 year 6.5 million

bullpen
closer-juan cruz 3 year 9 million (if cruz fails, move looper to closer since he used to be a closer)
set up man-keith foulke/eric gagne 1 year 1 million
mid relief-tom gordon (minor league contract)
mid relief-eddie guardado (1 year 1 million)
mid relief-rudy seanez (1 year 1 million)
long relief/swingman-jon lieber or odalis perez (1 year 1.5 million), whoever takes less $$
lefty specialist-joe beimel/dennys reyes, depends on who takes less money (2 year 5 million)

starting lineup
c-ivan rodriguez (1 year 5 million)/paul lo duca (minor league contract)
1b-kevin millar (1 year 2.5 million)
2b-orlando hudson (2 year 15 million)/ray durham (1 year 3.5 million) platoon
3b-ty wigginton (1 year 5.5 million)-if not then joe crede is the alternative
ss-orlando cabrera (1 year 7 million)
dh-frank thomas/cliff floyd (both get 1 million/year) rotation
of-manny ramirez (3 year 75 million)
of-adam dunn(1 year 10 million). a backup plan is either bobby abreu or garrett anderson
cf-jim edmonds and ken griffey jr. (each at 1 year 3 million)
util-nomar garciaparra or mark grudzelanek (1 year 2 million)
backup of-luis gonzalez and moises alou (1 year 1 million)

obviously the roster is still subject to change since i would also invite a bunch of other players to spring training to contend with the above. a lot of my players are old and injury-prone, that’s why i will stockpile experienced players at the spring training complex and triple-a.

spring training invites: chuck james, livan hernandez, orlando hernandez, sidney ponson, and kenny rogers (all can potentially start) ron villone, tyler johnson, kent mercker, and brian shouse, randy flores (lefty with pulse), brad wilkerson, jacque jones, and jay payton (can hit lefthander, centerfielder range), jamey wright, john parrish, and julian tavarez (swingman), daryle ward (pinch hitter with pop), rich aurillia and doug mieciewicz (infield versatility with some pop), javier valentin (catcher with some pop), mike timlin, aquilino lopez, luis ayala, breandan donnelly, and will ohman and ambroigx burgos (can probably fill in as the set up man), mark sweeney (professional pinch hitter), gary bennett and sal fasano (catching depth), emil brown (depth outfield), damion easley, miguel cairo, ramon martinez, and alex cintron (utility), elmer dessens (swingman)

INCENTIVE LADEN minor league deals with opt-out clause for players coming back from tommy john surgery: jason isringhausen, mark mulder, curt schilling, tom glavine, jason jennings, matt wise, scott elarton, paul byrd

hell, i can make 2-3 decent teams with this pool of players

What about the other 103 players who tested positive for steroids?

Here’s a list of roughly 100 Cy Young and MVP candidates from the past 10 years. I am beginning to think it is likely that many, perhaps most, of them were using. Would you view the few that have been “caught” so far differently if at least half (which is reasonable) of these names were revealed to have been among those who tested positive in 2003?

A.J. Burnett, A.J. Pierzynski, Adam Dunn, Adam LaRoche, Adrian Beltre, Adrian Gonzalez, Albert Pujols, Alex Rios, Alfonso Soriano, Andruw Jones, Andy Pettitte, Aubrey Huff, Barry Zito, Bartolo Colon, Ben Sheets, Bengie Molina, Bobby Abreu, Brad Lidge, Brad Penny, Brandon Webb, Brian Giles, Bronson Arroyo, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Carlos Lee, Carlos Pena, Carlos Zambrano, CC Sabathia, Chase Utley, Chipper Jones, Curt Schilling, Curtis Granderson, Daisuke Matsuzaka, David Ortiz, David Wright, Derek Jeter, Derrek Lee, Dustin Pedroia, Edwin Encarnacion, Eric Hinske, Eric Gagne, Felipe Lopez, Francisco Cordero, Frank Thomas, Freddy Garcia, Garret Anderson, Gary Sheffield, Gil Meche, Grady Sizemore, Greg Maddux, Hanley Ramirez, Ian Kinsler, Ichiro Suzuki, Ivan Rodriguez, J.J. Putz, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jake Peavy, Jamie Moyer, Jarrod Washburn, Jason Bay, Jason Giambi, Jayson Werth, Jeff Suppan, Jeff Kent, Jermaine Dye, Jim Thome, Jimmy Rollins, Joe Mauer, Joe Saunders, Joel Pineiro, Johan Santana, Johnny Damon, Jonathan Papelbon, Jose Guillen, Jose Reyes, Jose Valentin, Josh Beckett, Josh Hamilton, Juan Gonzalez, Justin Morneau, Justin Verlander, Kenny Rogers, Kerry Wood, Kevin Millwood, Kevin Youkilis, Lance Berkman, Luis Gonzalez, Magglio Ordonez, Manny Ramirez, Mariano Rivera, Mark Buehrle, Mark Mulder, Matt Garza, Matt Holliday, Michael Young, Miguel Cabrera, Miguel Tejada, Mike Cameron, Mike Lowell, Mike Mussina, Milton Bradley, Orlando Cabrera, Pat Burrell, Paul Konerko, Pedro Martinez, Prince Fielder, Randy Johnson, Rick Ankiel, Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, Ryan Dempster, Ryan Howard, Sammy Sosa, Tim Hudson, Tim Lincecum, Tim Wakefield, Todd Helton, Tom Glavine, Torii Hunter, Trevor Hoffman, Vernon Wells, Vladimir Guerrero, Yuniesky Betancourt
Two replies said “this is a useless question”. I disagree. It would be inconceivable if fewer than 20 of the names on the above list were not “using”. It is highly probable that 30 to 70 of them used. Hard work? Just about everyone in the majors works hard. And still, 17% of all players in 2003 tested positive — how many more had just gone long enough in between injections to test clean? We can safely assume that test caugh at most, half of those using performance enhancers. Either A-Rod gets a pass, or we need to know about the other 103 — if the other 103 were all second stringers (impossible) then the A-Rod deal is a much bigger issue.
VIP — great stuff. I took a quick sample of players that placed in the top 15 in MVP & Cy Young voting, then eliminated about 170 of those immediately, but I knew I would miss a few. Matsuzaka obviously wasn’t even on US soil. The media venom for the few obvious targets has been stunning, but the news is a for profit business, so I get it. But I agree, in fairness, we need to apply the same standard to all — either ignore the whole issue, or reveal all the information. Then let’s move on!
