Our Review

Tom Petty's second album sans Heartbreakers found him working with Rick Rubin, who produced 1994's Wildflowers. The rootsy and timeless sounding recording remains an earthy and organic contrast to the comparatively overproduced outcome of 1991's Into the Great Wide Open (as mixed by Jeff Lynne). The title track could be Petty's best love song next to "Angel Dream (No. 2)" from the 1996 soundtrack to She's the One and "Time to Move On" sounds like George Harrison covering Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire (without all those synthesizers). "You Don't Know How It Feels" yielded a minor hit and a huge fan favorite — if you've hit one of his concerts since the song surfaced, you know this by the audience sing-alongs on the chorus. The funny lyrics on "It's Good to Be King" beautifully contrast the subtle stings in the chorus and tube-burning guitar solo that is unmistakably Petty's.

Tom Petty at his best (5 stars)
This album came out when I was 8 years old and was my first introduction to Tom Petty, making me a fan for life. As soon as I heard "You Don't Know How It Feels," I was hooked. There isn't a bad song on this timeless, classic album. If I wanted to list the stand out tracks, I'd end up listing almost every one of them. If you don't already own this album, BUY IT NOW!

WIldflowers - Simple music (5 stars)
The best Tom Petty there is. If stranded on desert island...this would be one my choices. I can listen to 'Crawling back to you' a 1000 times.

Striped down and subtle, but still GREAT... (5 stars)
I heard "You Don't Know How it Feels," on the radio and knew I had to have this CD. It's always a treat when you buy a record for one particular song and then get an entire CD full of fantastic music. Rick Rubin produced this gem and the difference between the Jeff Lynne produced CDs is obvious. This Petty record is striped down and subtle, yet still VERY distinctive. I love it. It's refreshing to hear songs like "Cabin D

Upon the release of their first album in the late '70s, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were shoehorned into the punk/new wave movement by some observers who picked up on the tough, vibrant energy of the group's blend of Byrds riffs and Stonesy swagger. In a way, the categorization made sense. Compared to the heavy metal and art rock that dominated mid-'70s guitar rock, the Heartbreakers' bracing return to roots was nearly as unexpected as the crashing chords of the Clash. As time progressed, it...
