Our Review

John Lennon struck back in 1974 with Walls and Bridges, an album written and conceived during his 18-month “lost weekend” in Los Angeles. While the album certainly bears its scars (“Scared,” “Going Down on Love,” “Nobody Loves You (When You’re Down and Out)”), it’s also typical of Lennon’s nature: a resilient album of strong musicianship and flawless execution. Even at his most personal and pained, Lennon has always maintained an impeccable, often startling, sense of professionalism. “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night,” his duet with Elton John, is a pure neurotic party anthem highlighted by the honking sax of Rolling Stones sideman Bobby Keys. “#9 Dream” is the requisite piece of utopian pop that Lennon mastered throughout the ‘70s, lushly orchestrated and hauntingly sad in its optimism. Add the bitter determination of “Steel and Glass” alongside casual throwaways such as “Ya Ya” (with teenage son Julian on drums) and the instrumental “Beef Jerky,” and there rested the last self-portrait of the man until his 1980 comeback.

John Again (5 stars)
An album largely unappreciated in its time is amazingly vibrant and shimmering in this newly remastered release. John's voice on all the new releases is just haunting. Bravo to Jack Douglas and Yoko for lovingly stripping away the excess of the 80's and giving us back our John up front and center. Basically it presents to us who John was in the end---after he blew up the dream and became a far more authentic and, well, stripped down vers

The Lost Weekend Album (4 stars)
This is John's 1974 album, which was during a period in his life (18 months) where he and Yoko split and John dated May Pang; The Lost Weekend. This album was a very important in John's career, not only because it was his only solo record without Yoko being by his side, but it contains his only US #1 hit, Whatever Gets You Thru The Night. Other highlights of the album include #9 Dream, a Beatles-ish song that sounds like a Magical Mystery er

Woah now! (5 stars)
I'm not really a review guy these days but when I strolled across my favourite John Lennon album I observed two things: A) There were only like 4 reviews. B) One of them presented one star and called the one and only Dr. Winston O'Boogie's music "garbage." Listen to "#9 Dream!" That is some breath-taking garbage!

Biography

Born: October 09, 1940 in Liverpool, England
Genre: Rock
Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s

Out of all the Beatles, John Lennon had the most interesting — and frustrating — solo career. Lennon was capable of inspired, brutally honest confessional songwriting and melodic songcraft; he also had a tendency to rest on his laurels, churning out straight-ahead rock & roll without much care. But the extremes, both in his music and his life, were what made him fascinating. Where Paul McCartney was content to be a rock star, Lennon dabbled in everything from revolutionary politics...
