Our Review

Culled from outtakes from their past decade's worth of work in order to have a studio album to promote during their 1981 AmericanTour, Tattoo You is a surprisingly cohesive collection and considered by many hardcore fans to be the Rolling Stones' last solid studio album. Time will decide that matter, but for what it is, Tattoo You does feature all the trademarks that made the band an enduring entity long past their first rounds of international success. "Start Me Up" has become one of the group's biggest hits, while "Little T&A" is the perfect showcase for Keith Richards' parched snarl. "Hang Fire" and "Neighbours" define the harder edge of the band's sound. "Black Limousine" nods to their blues roots, while the falsetto-led "Tops," "Heaven" and "No Use in Crying" gently pave the way for "Waiting On A Friend," with a guest sax solo from jazz legend Sonny Rollins, that wraps things up on a strong note of confidence.

Better Than Expected For It's Time (5 stars)
When this album arrived in the marketplace in 1981, after a lackluster" Emotional Rescue," it was lightyears beyond the former. The album was a bit of a hodgepodge of newly recorded tracks, and songs from their exhaustive vaults of unheard material. Some are old enough tracks to even feature Mick Taylor who left the band in 1974. Be that as it may, it's absolutely their best record of the 1980's. It's divided into a "rock side&

Hangfire (5 stars)
This fact-paced, raw tune is a refreshing change that takes the Stones back to their Blues roots with some Rockabilly thrown in for good measure. Jagger's vocals and lyric interpretation of a complex theme reflect an energy not seen since "Brown Sugar". Richard's licks and riffs come through clean in the track mix and are Chuck-Berry-crisp accompanied by Wood's strong bass track. Watt's drums, in addition to keeping time to perfect

By the time the Rolling Stones began calling themselves the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the late '60s, they had already staked out an impressive claim on the title. As the self-consciously dangerous alternative to the bouncy Merseybeat of the Beatles in the British Invasion, the Stones had pioneered the gritty, hard-driving blues-based rock & roll that came to define hard rock. With his preening machismo and latent maliciousness, Mick Jagger became the prototypical rock frontman,...
