Our Review

By the mid-‘70s Led Zeppelin had established themselves as the decade’s megastars. It took nearly two years to follow up Houses of the Holy with this ambitious double album in 1975 that included songs the band had been holding back alongside challenging new material that expanded the band’s musical vocabulary. “Kashmir” is eight and a half minutes of pure middle-eastern tension. “Houses of the Holy,” “Trampled Under Foot,” “Sick Again,”  “Custard Pie” and “The Rover” are prime Jimmy Page derived Led Zeppelin, thick with complex guitar riffs that play against John Bonham’s aggressive sense of timekeeping, making for a band that simultaneously crush and groove. The epic 11-minute “In My Time of Dying” brings the group back to its blues roots with additional funk, while “Boogie With Stu,” “Black Country Woman,” “Down by the Seaside” and the acoustic interlude “Bron-Y-Aur” are among the most relaxed songs in the Zeppelin catalog. “In the Light” is Zeppelin’s idea of a ballad, soft, eerie, soothing with a circuitous instrumental crescendo. A double album that was considered by some to be a slightly bloated affair, Physical Graffiti now stands as a full-angle view of this secretive, enigmatic and legendary band.

Masterpiece (5 stars)
What an honor to be the first to review this album! The term that best fits Physical Graffiti is epic. From start to finish, there's a sweeping almost operatic quality to this work. The songs here cover a lot of territory - both musically and emotionally - and also contain some of the group's most haunting, and evocative work. There's something about Kashmir, for instance, that just seems... transcendent, for lack of a better word. You can't

Down By The Seaside (5 stars)
Double album, Cool album jacket, 15 classic tunes. Song names always confused me Bron-Yr-Aur, Boogie With Stew, The Wonton Song, Trampled Under Foot, nobody knew the songs names, but we knew every note and word to these 15 classics. A great place to start

Timeless Rock (5 stars)
I have favorites on every single Zep album ever made, but Physical Graffiti was the album(s) that opened the door for me and led me to seek out more of that amazing sound. I wore the needle right through these disks (as well as Houses of the Holy) and drove my friends nuts because I would play nothing else on my car casette for months. Boogie With Stu is still one of my most favorite songs around, and it revealed to me that these when guys w

Led Zeppelin was the definitive heavy metal band. It wasn't just their crushingly loud interpretation of the blues — it was how they incorporated mythology, mysticism, and a variety of other genres (most notably world music and British folk) — into their sound. Led Zeppelin had mystique. They rarely gave interviews, since the music press detested the band. Consequently, the only connection the audience had with the band was through the records and the concerts. More than any other band,...
