Songs represent the range of REM's rock/alternative/other abilities. Nuff said.

Somewhere between acid rock and grunge is Monster. Kurt had some nice dark amp/guitar induced timbers and Trent (NIN) has sound feelings of techno and revitalized there importance with rock. A must have for frustrated venting when nothing more than common life is getting extreme. Let me in is addicting and Kenneth is worth having for just about anyone.

Takes A Listen or Two, But Man, This Record "ROCKS!" (5 stars)
This technically isn't a rock album, but they sure did a good job of disguising it. This needs to be be heard twice for full appriciation. Pete Buck's guitar just jangles throughout, while Stipe's vocals are quieter, yet more mysterious. This album was dedicated to River Phoenix and Kurt Cobain, who both died in 1994 (the year this came out.) R.E.M. marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional...
